Football in Sweden

Swedish football association was established in 1904 year. This organization rules the national football team of Sweden and the football league system in the country. First match of national team of Sweden was played in 1908 year. For all these years Swedish football national team have strong appearance in international football tournaments. They have one 2nd place, two 3rd place and one 4th place in FIFA World Cup competition. In UEFA European Championship their best achievement is reaching the semi-finals during 1992. Because of this good performance in international football tournaments Sweden is placed on 10th place in FIFA all-time table.

Top two members of Swedish football league system are:

  • Allsvenskan – highest football division in Sweden formed by 16 clubs
  • Superettan – second-highest football division also with 16 clubs

Every year Swedish football association hosts a national knock-out football competition named Svenska Cupen (Swedish Cup). In this event participate all clubs from Allsvenskan and Superettan plus another 68 clubs from lower football divisions. The winner is qualified for UEFA Europa League.
