This is highest-football division in Italy. In the years number of clubs participating in Serie A varies from 16 to 21. The ranking is changed after each match of championship and the clubs are arranged in table according to points won, head-to head records, goal difference of head-to-head matches, goal difference in the season, goals scored and draw results. First 4 clubs in end-season table, qualify directly to UEFA Champions League group round. 5th and 6th club are qualified for UEFA Europa League together with the winner of Coppa Italia. If the winner of this tournament is already registered for any other UEFA tournament last spot for UEFA Europa League is taken by 7th club in end-season ranking. Clubs finished in 18th, 19th and 20th place in end-seasonal table are demoted to lower division named Serie B and their spots are taken from top 3 clubs in Serie B.
